Taking God's Law for Granted
The people of Israel were so elated that the ark of the Lord had been returned to them after their defeat by the Philistines and the capture of the ark that they became careless and looked upon the ark or into the ark in a way that God had forbidden. Therefore, God struck 70 men of their city for taking the Law of God for granted. (I Samuel 6:19) I pray we will never make this same mistake and suffer similar consequences.
It is easy to get lax with the things of God. When things are going well, we begin to think that God is blessing us, so we can fudge on some of the things He commands. This is never true. God's Word is very serious. Whatever He says is to be obeyed all of the time by all people. No one gets a pass because they have done good things or God is in a good mood that day. Since God is holy, He always punishes sin, and He punishes us harshly when we know His laws, and we break them anyway. All of us must guard against these sins that come when we have our guard down, and we feel we are in the good graces of God. It should be that when He blesses us, we are spurred to obey Him even more, not less.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 7-10.
