No Longer Slaves
The Lord was always reminding the Israelites that He was the one who brought them up out of Egypt, so they would not be slaves. He had broken the bars of oppression and caused them to stand up straight and tall. (Leviticus 26:13) That should have been a huge blessing to His people, but they often complained in their freedom and spoke of returning to Egypt. Why would they ever want to do that? It takes trust in the Lord and effort to be free people and do the right things. It is easier to be a slave, but it involves bondage and pain, too.
Today, God does not want believers to be slaves either. He has set us free, so we are no longer slaves of sin, Satan, or this world. However, to stay free we must trust Him daily and put forth the effort to do His will for our lives. It is sad to say that many believers return to trusting the idols of their past. They give in to Satan, or they listen to this world instead of the Lord. They return to bondage by their own free will, and they suffer the consequences, which are harsh. Then, they get upset with the Lord, but it is not His fault. He did His part to make us free, but we must do our part to live as His children, free from any type of bondage.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 2-4.
