Not by Might, nor by Power
How can we accomplish our goals and dreams? If we only rely on our own might and power, we will not accomplish what God has for us to do, and that ought to be what we are trying to do. What we need is the power and guidance of the Spirit of God. (Zechariah 4:6) Then, nothing is impossible for us, since God is all-powerful and all-wise.
Zerubbabel was the governor of the people who returned from the exile in Babylon. He had a huge task. He had to oversee the rebuilding of the temple and the city, while the people were having to build their homes and get their crops and livestock established. It was almost impossible with a group of people who had little experience with all of these things after being in Babylon for 70 years. Therefore, the Lord told Zechariah to tell him that it was only by the Spirit of God that these things could be done. Thankfully that is what Zerubbabel did, and the work was completed with the help of Ezra, Nehemiah, and others whom the Spirit of the Lord brought to lend their gifts and abilities to the task.
Are you depending on yourself or on the Spirit of God? As believers, we know that we can do nothing without Jesus. (John 15:5) The way Jesus empowers us is by the Spirit. He told His disciples that before He ascended back to heaven, and it still holds true today. Surrender your might and power to Him, and humbly ask the Spirit to fill you for the work God has for you. Then, stand back and watch things happen that you would have never thought possible.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Zechariah 6-9.
