The Great and Awesome God

Nehemiah knew who he was talking with when he prayed. (Nehemiah 1:5) That knowledge makes a huge difference in our prayers. Our God is great and awesome! There is no one like Him. He preserves the covenants He makes with groups and individuals, because He always acts in lovingkindness toward those who love Him and keep His commandments. Therefore, this shows us several things that can lead us to better pray according to His will.

God is great and awesome. He can and will do whatever He wants. We have no power to get Him to do our will or to do the wrong thing. He is holy and just in His greatness, so that He always does the right hing in every situation. Therefore, we come to Him humbly, seeking His will to be done.

God is faithful to keep His covenants. He is always faithful in whatever He says or does. When He makes a special covenant, He will not forsake that agreement. Therefore, as long as the person or persons with whom He has made the covenant love Him and keep His commandments, everything will go well. However, like defaulting on a loan, if we fail to uphold our end of the agreement, He has no option, but to punish us and stop blessing us. It does not mean we lose our salvation, but we lose our blessings and protection.

Therefore, when we pray, we must make sure we are loving Him fully, and if we are breaking our covenant to keep His commandments, we must confess those sins, before we do anything else. That is how Nehemiah prayed for Jerusalem, and it was based on His relationship with the Great and Awesome God.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Nehemiah 2-4.
