The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts

Many believers misunderstand spiritual gifts. One of the main misunderstandings is about the purpose of having spiritual gifts. The gifts are not given to us, so that we can benefit from them. They are given for the profit of all of the other people with whom we come into contact. (I Corinthians 12:7) This helps explain the importance of relationships, too.

As we read I Corinthians 12, we read a lot about spiritual gifts, and we read about the unity of the Body of Christ, the church. God gives spiritual gifts to every believer, so that we can use them in the ministry of the church to bless other people, both unbelievers and believers. Therefore, we must have good relationships with others in the church and in the community, so we can use our gifts for their good. The person with the gift of teaching, teaches so others can be built up in correct doctrine and practice of the faith. A person who has the gift of administration uses it to lead people to do the ministry of the church, so all are blessed. Even the gift of speaking in other tongues or languages and the gift of healing are given to be able to reach out to other people and meet their need to know the Lord Jesus and grow in Him.

I pray that all of us will discover our spiritual gifts, the manifestation of the Spirit in us, so we can bless others and build up the kingdom of God.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Corinthians 14-16 and II Corinthians 1.
