Interdependence

Many times we talk about helping one another, or we talk about cooperation with others. However, I like what Henry Blackaby says better. He says that the Lord made us to be interdependent on others. In other words, we need each other to fight the battles of life and to overcome the challenges we face. This truth is illustrated well by what Joab told his brother, Abishai, before they led the army of Israel against the enemy. (I Chronicles 19:12) Let's consider what he said.

Joab was aligning his troops against the Syrian troops, and he sent Abishai to lead the rest of the troops against the Ammonite troops who were fighting along side of the Syrians. His admonition was that if the Syrians were too strong for his troops then Abishai could come to his aid, and if the Ammonites were too strong for Abishai, he would come help him. Isn't that simple, but yet profound? We never know when we will run into any enemy or a challenge that is too much for us. Therefore, we need to have a brother or sister in Christ who is ready to come to our aid. Also, we need to stand ready to do the same for them as the need arises. This is interdependence, and it is God's will for us. We are to live in relationship with others, so that we can pick each other up or help in any way, and they can do the same for us.

If we are not living lives of interdependence now, we need to cultivate close relationships and begin to practice this principle. This will greatly help us to live in victory.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 22-24.
