A Meaningful Prayer
Most of us have heard about the prayer of Jabez. Many of us have prayed it for ourselves. (I Chronicles 4:10) Therefore, I will not be too wordy, just try to get to the substance of why it is such a meaningful prayer. Of course, God put His stamp of approval on it, when He granted what Jabez requested.
I believe it was a humble prayer by a humble man. He prayed for God to bless Him, but he was not picky. He knew that God was the One who knew just the right way to bless him. He asked for his territory to be enlarged, but he did not say how much. He left that to the Lord. He asked for God's hand to be with him, because He knew he could do nothing on his own. Then, he requested for God to keep him from evil and that he would not cause pain. Jabez knew he was weak, but with God's direction he could escape doing evil things, and if he abstained from evil, he would not cause the pain that comes from sins we commit. What a meaningful prayer!
Not only do I recommend that you use it as a guide for your prayers, but God recommends it, too. That is why He inspired the writer of Chronicles to record it in His Word. Like any Scriptural prayer of a righteous man or woman, it gives us insight into how to pray meaningful prayers that get answered in the affirmative.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 5-7.
