The Earth Was Divided
Eber named his son Peleg, which means division, because in his days the earth was divided. (I Chronicles 1:19) This must have been a significant event for Eber to do this, but what happened exactly? How was the earth divided?
Some people think that it was the divisions of the nations after the Tower of Babel. Once the language was confused by creating different languages, the people began to separate into their own areas of the world. That could be it, but why was the word "nation" not used?
The best possibility is that when the flood happened and God opened the fountains of the deep to let water come out of the interior of the earth, that the continents were divided. That would explain how all of the animals could be gathered to the ark before the flood. They could have walked there from any part of the earth. However, after the continents were divided in the flood the Ice Age came. This caused a huge drop in the level of the oceans, so that there were land bridges between the continents until the end of the Ice Age. Then, the ice at the poles melted enough to cover the land bridges, and thus, the earth was divided. This is probably what happened in the days of Peleg.
Isn't it amazing how the Lord includes things like this in the Bible, so we can piece together what happened in the history of the earth? This gives us a view that the scientists don't even have with all of their theories.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 2-4.
