A Root of All Kinds of Evil
A root enables a plant to grow. Therefore, we use the word root to mean where something started. Sometimes we say, "We need to get to the root of the problem." Well, there is one root that leads to all kinds of evil. Do you know what that root is? It is the love of money. (I Timothy 6:10) All of us much be very careful, because it is very easy to allow the love of money to get into our lives and cause much harm.
Money is necessary and useful. God owns all of it, and He gives us all of the money and possessions we have. Then, He requires us to be good managers or stewards of His money. If we are faithful to use it and share it according to His will, we receive many blessings from the Lord. However, if we begin to love the money, instead of the One who gave it to us, we bring many sorrows on ourselves.
When we love money, we commit the sin of idolatry. We worship money, so that we give our time and energy to making money and spending money, instead of worshiping God and following Him. Soon, we can stray from the faith, as our greediness leads us farther and farther into the trap of what our money can buy. We neglect God's Word, and we do not spend time with the Lord, because we do not want to know His will. We just want more money and the things it can buy. Often, we get into debt beyond our means to pay, and we begin to lack the necessities of life. We experience sorrows that are all related to our love of money and our departure from God's way.
Please, remember that we are to love the Lord with "all" of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Quickly repent of anything that would take you away from that supreme love for Him. Keep the focus on the One who died and rose again that you might have life eternal and abundant. This will free you of so much pain and sorrow and lead you to so much joy.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Timothy 1-3.
