A Little Leaven
Sin spreads. We are deceived if we think we can just sin a little bit. When we begin to compromise with sin, we begin the slide down the slippery slope away from God. The church at Corinth had a huge sin problem. God inspired Paul to warn them about their situation. He reminded them that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. (I Corinthians 5:6) That is true all of the time, so we need to absorb this truth.
Leaven is the old word for yeast. When we make bread we put leaven in the lump of dough, so that it will rise when cooked. The lump has to sit for a while before it is baked, and during that time the power of the yeast spreads to the entire lump of dough. Sin does the same thing. It spreads to fill our lives, and it spreads to all of those around us. That is why we must repent of sin and confess it immediately. It is also why we must allow the Spirit to grow us in the Lord until we have less and less sin in our lives. That is God's will for every believer. Then, instead of being a negative influence on others, we can be a good influence for the Lord.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Corinthians 6-8.
