Watch and Pray

Jesus asked His disciples to pray with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane before He was arrested and crucified. He took Peter, James, and John away from the others, so they could be even closer to Him while He prayed for the Father's will to be done. Three times Jesus asked them to watch and pray, and all three times they fell asleep. They did not understand Jesus' instructions for them and how they could help them. (Mark 14:38) We need to consider them well.

We all need to watch and pray, because the Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Watching helps us, because we often sin by not thinking about what is happening to us. We do not watch out for Satan's traps and the temptations people and the world put in front of us. Often, we fall into sin easily by not considering the consequences of our words or actions. However, if we are watchful of sin, we will not give in to those things. When we are watching, and we see a difficult situation coming, we must pray to the Lord to give us direction and strength to do His will, instead of sin. Then, our weak flesh can be empowered by the willing Spirit. Calling on God is the source of all we need, so prayer is the key.

See what Jesus was saying? If we watch and pray every day, we can live in righteousness, not sin. We can overcome the weaknesses of the flesh.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Mark 15-16 and Luke 1-2.
