Humility and Christmas

Jesus began the process of humbling Himself in the little town of Bethlehem when He was laid in a manger. No one ever humbled Himself as much as Jesus. He left the riches and splendor of heaven to take on human flesh in a cattle stall. He came to be a servant, even though He was Almighty God. He lived in poverty, though He owned everything. Then, He completed His humble life by dying the worst death imaginable on the Cross of Calvary, dying in our place and for our sins. What humility began that first Christmas night! However, God, the Father, always exalts those who humble themselves in His sight.(James 4:10) Therefore, Jesus was lifted up more than anyone else can ever be exalted.(Philippians 2:8-11) One day every knee will bow to Him as the Lord of all.

That is why I say Christmas is all about humility. We need to remember that, so that we do not bring pride into our celebration of the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. How can we do that, you may ask? Let me suggest just a few ways. We can give a gift to simply show off how much money we have, and we can hope that people will praise us for doing that. We can show off our new clothes and gifts in an attempt to bring attention to ourselves. We can give gifts of any kind without acknowledging that all we have comes from the Lord. Finally, we can fail to mention that Jesus is the greatest gift anyone could ever receive. Let's decide to put away pride this Christmas, and show true humility. God will take care of the rest.

Tomorrow, I intend to read James 5 and I Peter 1-2.
