Trusting God's Promises
The Bible is full of promises from God to individuals and to groups. God promised Abraham a son in his old age, and Abraham trusted God's promise.(Romans 4:20,21) Many of the promises apply to all believers, so they apply to us today. Let's see what we can learn from Abraham about trusting in God's promises.
Abraham heard God's promise, and he did not waver in unbelief. He took God at His word, so that he did not doubt that he would have a son. Unfortunately, the same thing can't be said for his wife, Sarah. She doubted God, and gave her maid servant, Hagar, to her husband to bear a son for her. That unbelief caused many problems. We need to be like Abraham and have a single-minded faith in God's promises that does not waver because of unbelief.
Abraham's faith grew as he waited for God to answer His promise, because Abraham was constantly giving God the glory for His promise and what He was going to do. He was fully convinced he would have a son, because He knew that whatever God promises, He is able to perform. When we give God glory and magnify His name, it builds our faith, and it shows God that we are trusting Him. Also, when we know the power and authority of God, we do not doubt that He is able to perform what He promises. Therefore, we need to draw near to God often, so we know Him well. The better we know Him, the more confidence we have in Him and His Word.
Let's watch for God's promises as we read the rest of the New Testament. Let's decide to live by them, not wavering. Let's tell others the promises of God and give Him glory for them. Then, let's see what He does to answer His promises to us.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Romans 5-7.
