Real Love
Many people hold to a false picture of love. For some it is simply a feeling, which is really absurd, if you think about it. For others it is an arrangement where if you meet my needs, I will meet your needs. That is not love either. Love is unselfish commitment to care for another person, so that you put their needs first, over your own needs. Then, there is another element that is very important, too. You decide to do what is right and not what is wrong when relating to that person.(Romans 12:9)
Think about it this way. Would this be real love? If a man said he loved a woman, but all he had was a feeling or a physical attraction. Mostly, he wanted someone to cook for him and clean his clothes. He treated her badly when he did not get what he wanted, and on the side, he went to prostitutes whenever he desired. Sound familiar?
Well now apply this to the Lord. Is it real love, if we have a fuzzy feeling in our hearts when we think about God, but mostly we want Him to bless us with money and other stuff? Yes, we want eternal life, too, because we do not want to end up in hell, so we go to church some. However, we do not really hate doing what He says is evil, so that we turn to other things to meet our needs often, and we do not do what He asks us to do either. Sound familiar?
Let's decide to have real love for the Lord and for others. Let's make an unselfish commitment to put the Lord first, to hate what He says is evil, and to passionately do what is good. Then, let's do the same for the people around us, our family, our Christian friends, and others. That is what Jesus did, wasn't it?
Tomorrow, I intend to read Romans 13-15.
