Like a Stubborn Calf
Once I assisted another man who was trying to catch a stubborn calf. The calf was blinded from having pink eye. He could not see where to eat his hay, and he needed eye medicine to clear up the pink eye, but he would not listen to us. All he would do is run away at the slightest noise we would make. It was not until he had run into and through a barb wire fence several times that we could hem him up and put the sulfur medicine in his eyes. It was an ordeal. The Lord has the same trouble with us sometimes. We are like stubborn calves who won't listen or let Him care for us at all.(Hosea 4:16)
What does He do in a situation like that? Yes, He goes after us, but He might let us forage in the open country for a while to show us we can't make it without Him. Let's consider this picture. We have a Loving Heavenly Father who wants to feed us and take care of our every need.(Psalm 23) However, we are stubborn, so that we end up searching around in the open country for whatever dry grass we can find. We get lost looking for water. We need medicine, but there is none to be found.
Where are you today? Are you feasting in the green pastures, drinking at the still waters, or foraging in the open country? It makes all the difference in the world in your quality of life. Even as a believer, if you are foraging in the open country with a stubborn heart toward God, you will have a miserable life until you decide to listen to Him and allow Him to lead you and provide for you. Where are you, and what are you going to do?
Tomorrow, I intend to read Hosea 5-7.
