Learning Obedience Through Suffering
Last night I went into the sympathy Jesus has for us, because He experienced all of our temptations while He was in human flesh. Tonight, I want to add another dimension. Jesus learned obedience through the things He suffered.(Hebrews 5:8) Every time the Father showed Jesus that He had to face an episode of suffering, He learned obedience by His experience. He was never disobedient, but He grew in His understanding of obedience when He was called on to suffer. He had to decide to take the suffering in the right attitude and fulfill the will of the Father. He did this all through His life on earth from birth to death.
In fact, Hebrews 5:9 tells us that after Jesus was matured or perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation. He did that when He died the worst death anyone ever had to experience. Not only did He endure the torture of the crucifixion, but He was crushed by the sins of the whole world being placed on Him, so that His eternal fellowship with the Father was broken, while He paid for those sins with His life's blood. Every suffering event in His life led up to this incredible suffering. He did not go to the Cross until He had learned obedience to the max. The Father prepared Him for our redemption through leading Him into suffering.
Since that is true for Jesus, it is even more true for us. We learn obedience each time we obey the Father by entering into a time of suffering, We know He allowed it, so we don't rebel. We simply obey. The more we obey, the more mature we become, so we can handle the huge times of suffering and be good witnesses for Jesus. Suffering has a glorious purpose. We learn obedience, and we bring glory to God more and more each time.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Hebrews 8-10.
