August 6, 2006 - Psalms 70-71 and Romans 8:22-39
Most of us know about being in a hurry. We spend too much time in a hurry. We tell other people to "hurry up" when we need something or when we want something very badly. I was surprised to see that both of these passages dealt with hurrying. God spoke to my heart through that today. I pray that He will speak a personal message to you, too.
In Psalms 70 and 71 David asks God to "make haste" to help him. He was asking God to hurry up. God was not moving quickly enough for David. He wanted God's deliverance "right now." In Psalm 70 his need was that he was poor and needy. (v.5) I assume that means in an emotional or spiritual sense. Then, in Psalm 71 David is afraid that when he gets old his enemies will overtake him, because they will think God has forsaken him in his old age. Therefore, David wants God to hurry up and help him, so that others will know that he is not forsaken.
I believe that we need to be careful when we ask God to hurry up. I hope we really want God's timing and not our own. Surely, we don't want to tell God what to do. He is the only one who knows when to act and how to act in total righteousness. However, if we are expressing our need to Him by asking Him to hurry that is another thing. We can be saying that we feel that we can't wait another minute for His help. We should always feel that way, because without Him we can do nothing. I pray that we will have a sincerely longing to see God work in our lives soon, but that we will not try to play God and tell Him when to act and what to do.
In Romans 8 Paul said that he was eagerly awaiting the end of the world, so Jesus could come again and make all things new. Then, there would be no more corruption because of sin. He was asking Jesus to hurry up and come again. (v.23) He was living in that hope. It motivated him to faithfully serve the Lord each day looking for Jesus all the time. Is that your hope? Do you want Jesus to hurry up and come, so you can be totally without sin? Are you ready for that Day, so you can say, "Lord, hurry up?" I pray that you have the assurance of your salvation. (v31-36) I pray that you know that Jesus is always praying for you, because He longs to help you and to enable you to conquer in life. (v.27, 34-37) I pray that you are ready for heaven. If you are not willing to say, "Come quickly Lord Jesus" , I encourage you to search your heart for the reason. If we love Him completely, we should want to be with Him more than anything else. Yes, to live is Christ, but to die is gain.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 72-73 and Romans 9:1-15.
