August 14, 2006 - Psalms 89-90 and Romans 14

Psalms 89 and 90 assure us all of God's faithfulness. He is always faithful to fulfill His covenant promises. However, we often fall short on our part. We sin by doing the wrong things and by not doing the right things. When that happens, God has to punish us. It might seem that He is not keeping His promises during the time of discipline, but He is keeping them. He will show us later how He has been faithful.

In Palm 89 the psalmist praises God for His mercies and His faithfulness to promise that David's family would be on the throne of Judah forever, However, when they sinned, they were sent into exile, and it seemed that God had broken His promise. He did not. He restored the people to the land, and eventually He sent Jesus. Jesus was the descendant of David who would reign forever. God did not break His promise. He kept it in an even better way than we could imagine.

In Psalm 90 the psalmist praises God for His blessings, but it seems that life is so short and so hard. The reason for that is that we do not look to God as we should and we do not learn to number our days, so that we do His will. If we do that, we can be glad in the Lord all of our lives. How are you doing with keeping your part of the covenant with the Lord? Are you being faithful? Are you depending on Him? If not, that is the source of your pain and heart ache. Be faithful to God and watch to see how faithful He is to you.

Romans 14 is a great lesson for all of us. Life is about doing God's will by faith, because one day we will have to stand before Him and give an account of our life. Therefore, we must be faithful to do what we know is right. We must not be critical or judgmental toward those believers who do things a little different, and we must not do things to hurt other believers. The Christian life is about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, not about our selfish preferences. As we follow the Lord, He will guide us to know what to do, so we do it in faith. Whatever, we can't do in faith, we should not do it, because it is sin. Are you living by personal preferences or by faith? If you are living selfishly, it is a sin, and God can't bless you as He desires, even as one of His children.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 91-93 and Romans 15:1-13.
