June 16 - Psalms 109-111

David must have had a terrible time with people slandering him and spreading lies about him. I can definitely relate to that problem. Many times people have spread rumors, gossip, and outright falsehoods about me. It is very hurtful. In Psalm 109 David again calls on God to take action against his accusers. He suggests a long list of things that God could do to them, but he leaves it up to God in verse 21 to deal with him as God sees fit. All of us can be assured that life is not fair because of sin and sinful people, but God is good, and He can and will take care of His children. I hope you will let God take care of your enemies like David did.

Psalm 110 is a unique psalm about Jesus and about His second coming. A lot of times we think there is not much about Jesus or the second coming in the Old Testament, but the more we read the more we find. The Lord revealed to David in some way that Christ would be seated at the right hand of the Father after His resurrection and ascension, so that all of His enemies could be brought under His feet. This will prepare the way for Christ to come back to earth to reign for 1,000 years. At the same time David reminds us that Christ is a priest forever, too. In fact, He is our High Priest and the only Mediator. Therefore, the picture here is of Jesus, our King Priest coming to rule in power. That will happen one day, and we all need to be prepared for that day.

Psalm 111 is another psalm of praise. It is a good example of how to praise God. We can praise God for His works, but mostly we praise God for who He is, and we thank God for His works. Look at the list of God's attributes in this psalm. Each one is a reason to praise Him. He is perfectly holy, and He deserves our praise simply because of His perfection. Then, when we think of His love and mercy on top of that, we should be filled with a heart full of praise for Him.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 112-115.
