My Soul Waits for the Lord

Most of us suffer because we have not learned the importance of waiting on the Lord, and we have not learned how to do it. The Bible has several promises for those who wait on the Lord. God promises strength to those who wait upon Him in Isaiah 40:31. He promises us that strength will rejuvenate our lives, so we are able to accomplish great things. I believe all of these factors are why the psalmist emphasized how diligently he was waiting on the Lord. (Psalm 130:5,6) He affirmed that his soul was waiting on the Lord, and he was hoping in God's Word. Then, he told us he was waiting on the Lord more than a watchman was waiting for the morning. That is an interesting analogy that we need to explore, as we learn to wait on the Lord.

The English word "wait" does not have the same meaning as the Hebrew and Greek words used in the Bible. Today, when we say we are waiting, we simply mean we are sitting by passing time until something happens. A "waiting room" is where we spend the time until our doctor is ready to see us. However, in the Bible and many other languages the word wait means much more. It means to eagerly expecting something to happen. It means looking for someone to come or for something to happen. The analogy of the watchman being ready for the morning adds even to this meaning. The watchman was eager to see the light, to see things clearly, and to have enough light not to be caught off guard by an enemy. Therefore, he was eagerly and expectantly looking for the first rays of the sun to appear. Is that how we look to the Lord right now? Are we waiting for God to give us light to see, and are we hoping in His Word at the same time? Do we know God is faithful, so we are assured it will happen, but we just can't hardly restrain ourselves until He does it? That is the kind of waiting that motivates God to answer our prayers and reveal His will to us. I pray we will all wait upon the Lord effectively and receive all the blessings He has for us.
