Confessing Our Sins

God taught David a very valuable truth about sin that he passed on to us. (Psalm 32:5) Sin is like cancer. If we ignore it, and we just try to forget about it, the cancer continues to grow until it consumes us. However, if we acknowledge our sin to God, and we do not hide it, then, He will forgive our sin and wash it away. (I John 1:9)

God requires for us to be honest with Him and to take full responsibility for our sins. He knows that until we do that, we are not really serious about repenting of our sins. Therefore, He waits to see if we will try to hide them, or if we will confess them completely to Him. I mean to specifically name the sin, and how horrible it is, and then to ask Him to forgive it. This truth applies to all of our sins after we have trusted Christ for the forgiveness of all of our sins, so we can be reconciled to God. The reason we must confess our sins after salvation is that each sin has the power to move us farther from God and harm our relationship with Him.

It is like marriage. If you sin against your spouse, you are still married to them, but your relationship will not be intimate, until you acknowledge your sin sincerely and ask for forgiveness. Then, the stain is washed away, and there is restoration of your relationship with no hindrances.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 33-36.
