His Banner Over Us

The Song of Solomon is a love story about the marriage of Solomon and the Shulamite. We don't know for sure, but I believe she was his first wife, or one of his first wives, before he went wild marrying so many wives for political reasons and sensual reasons. It is a tender story that shows their love for each other and how they grew in their relationship. Since the marriage relationship is used to show us our relationship with Jesus once we get saved, we see a lot of parallels in these chapters.

The Shulamite tells the daughters of Jerusalem about how Solomon came to receive her as his bride. (Song of Solomon 2:4) He went to her parents house, and then he escorted her to the banqueting house for a huge feast together with their guests. He had prepared a banner of love over the place where she sat, and that banner was to show everyone his love and commitment to her. What a wonderful picture for us to absorb.

For all of us who have been married I hope we have very fond memories of our wedding day. I know we do marriage ceremonies much differently now than they did them in the Bible times, but we still do things that show our love and commitment to each other. Usually, there is a grand reception where we eat food, and cut the wedding cake, feeding it to each other. There are even other banners and messages to show our love and intention to be united until death parts us.

I think we can all see how this points to our "marriage" to Jesus. (Romans 7:4) He comes to pursue us and to draw us to Himself because of His great love for us. He desires for us to feast on the riches of His grace during our lives and to grow in our love for Him each day that passes. He puts His banner of love over us, so we know we are secure in Him and others see that we belong to Him. Then, we live faithfully with Him until we go to the Marriage Feast of the Lamb one day in heaven, ever to be with Jesus.
