The Greatness of God
There are many people in the world that we might refer to as being "great" people. However, what does "great" really mean? We refer to great athletes because of their ability in their sport. We have great actors and singers because of their talents in those areas. Then, there are great people based on their power and authority. No one human has all of the attributes of greatness, but God is truly great in every way possible.
King David summed up the greatness of God very well in a blessing or doxology not long before his death. (I Chronicles 29:12) Both riches and honor come from God who reigns over all. In His hand is power and might, as well as the ability to make great and to give strength to all. I believe that shows us why we owe Him all of our worship as the One Great God.
The world is looking everywhere for riches and honor, but they are looking in the wrong places, unless they are looking to God. There are all kinds of political leaders in the world who want to extend their power and their "reign" or control, but they can't do any more than God allows, because He reigns over all people and everything. Because He owns all of the riches, and He is the only One who can give out the honor, it shows us that He is the Greatest.
He has all power and all might of every kind. He can and does use it in any way He desires. No one has any power that compares to the power of God. He is the One who decides who will really become great in this world and in heaven. Of course, those are two very different things. Because of His power, He is the One who gives strength to all as we trust Him and humbly beseech Him for the strength we need. What a great and awesome God we serve.
