Taking God at His Word
Any time anyone makes a promise we have to consider the character and integrity of the one making the promise. Some people make great promises, but they are not able to fulfill what they have promised. Others simply forget and end up not doing what they promised to do. However, when it comes to God, we can always count on God keeping His promises. He never forgets, and He always has the power to do what He promised.
King David knew this truth very well. He took God at His Word, which He had spoken to Abraham almost 1,000 years before David came on the scene. (I Chronicles 27:23) Therefore, David did not take the number of those twenty and under, because the Lord had said that He would multiply Israel like the stars of the heavens. David believed God and was confident He would have plenty of people to carry out his plans for Israel.
Just notice what happened when David took the Lord at His Word. It caused him to adjust his life to what God had promised. That really showed that David trusted God. I wonder how many times we do that in our lives? I pray that we show God how much we trust Him in that way. If we do, we will see God do many amazing things.
The Bible is full of God's promises like this one. We should all read the Bible and mark every promise we find. Then, we should decide to believe it and to adjust our lives according to what God has said He would do for us. That is real faith. Remember what the book of James says, "Faith without works if dead," If we do not put action behind our belief, we have dead faith, which is not really faith at all. I pray we will all take God at His Word like David did.
