Bible Prayers

The Bible is filled with prayers that have been recorded for us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Each one is very unique and personal. There are no ritual prayers for us to pray as a matter of obligation. Even the "Lord's Prayer" is simply a guide for us so we know how to pray. When we read a Bible prayer, we should look for distinctive features and ask the Lord to teach us and show us how we can pray in a way that pleases Him.

The prayer that Jabez prayed is one of those prayers. It is a famous prayer because the writer of Chronicles was inspired to record it for us. (I Chronicles 4:10) Jabez called on God to bless him, enlarge his territory, and to be with him. He prayed that God would keep him from evil, so he would not cause anyone pain. Then, we are told that God granted him what he requested. Let's learn some about prayer today.

It is OK to pray for God to bless us. That is not being selfish. It is admitting our need to the Lord. We need Him to pour out what we need every day. Also, we need to keep growing and expanding, not only in material things, but spiritually. We always should pray for God to walk closely with us.

Just like Jesus taught us to pray in the Lord's Prayer, we should pray to be kept from evil. We must have the help of God's Spirit to warn us of evil and to empower us to defeat any temptation that might come on us. We must pray this, so our sins don't cause us and others pain. We must earnestly ask God to deliver us from evil, so we don't live in defeat, but in victory.
