A Leadership Transition
We see new leaders arise in various ways all of the time. Sometimes it is the result of an election. Other times, it is in a business setting. Also, we see it in the ministry of a church. When we see a new leader installed into a position, we wonder how he will do. This is especially true when the new leader follows a well established, well loved leader.
When Moses died, Joshua had already been chosen by God to succeed him. (Joshua 3:7) The Lord said to Joshua, "This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you." God had a way to make the transition smooth, and He is still able to do the same thing today, as we trust the Lord.
The first step in making a good leadership transition is making sure God is the one who has chosen the new leader, not the people. Yes, I know the people in the church have to go through the selection process, but those people have to be prayerfully seeking to hear from the Lord, so they choose God's man. Then, God will start to exalt him in the sight of all the people in the church.
There could be a feeling that no one could be as good as the old leader, but that is never true. All of us are expendable. There is always a capable person to take our place. God just has to assure the people that He will be with the new leader, as he was with the previous leader. In fact, sometimes God is with the new leader even more, like in the case of Elijah and Elisha. This is why leadership transitions can be a very good experience for us and God's church.
