Our Responsibility

Jesus has given all believers a very specific responsibility. His directions are widely misunderstood, even though He was very clear when He gave them. There is nothing hard to understand about what He said for us to do. We need to clear up this confusion, so we all can take care of our responsibility.

Jesus addressed His disciples after His resurrection in a straightforward way. (Matthew 28:19) He gave them the command to go and make disciples of Jesus. They were to do this for all the people groups of the earth. Once a person became a disciple of Jesus, they were to baptize them in water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Then, the very next verse told them to teach the new disciples all He had taught them, so they could do the same thing.

I think some of the misunderstanding about making disciples comes from the fact that we ordain preachers and missionaries to the full-time ministry. That makes some believers think they are not able to make disciples, only ordained people can do that. That is very wrong. We are all disciples, and we have Jesus's authority and power to make more disciples by leading people to Christ and teaching them.

I believe the other problem is that we do not realize that we have been baptized in the name of the triune God, Father, Son, and Spirit. We belong to Him. We are His children, gifted by God to do His will, not just saved from our sins, so we can go to heaven. It is our responsibility to do what it takes to bring as many people to heaven with us as we can in the power of the Lord.
