Doing More than Enough

We all have a basic philosophy of life, whether we realize it or not. Some of us have a very good philosophy that directs us in our daily life, while others have a very poor philosophy. It really does make a huge difference for us and the people around us. Of course, as believers, we want to look at life according to God's will and His way of doing things, but how is that simply stated and done? I believe the account of the people of Israel preparing to construct the Tabernacle gives us a great insight into this question. God asked all of the people to give of their possessions "voluntarily," so the craftsmen would have the correct materials to construct the Tabernacle according to God's design.  The people did what they were asked to do. (Exodus 36:5) In fact, the workmen had to tell Moses that the people had given "more than enough" materials to complete the job the Lord had commanded them to do. That shows us something about them, and about how we should live.

Our world is suffering from so many people, even some believers, having the wrong view of how to live. Some people live by "if it feels good, do it." That philosophy leads to all kinds of selfish problems and addictions that cause many problems. Others are content with "doing just enough to get by." Most of the time that view leads us to fall short of what really should be done. The best philosophy of life is to do "more than enough." Jesus even said this when He told the people to "go the extra mile." If we would apply this philosophy to every area of our lives and do more than enough of all that the Lord has commanded, our lives would be so much better. Our world would be a much better place, too. I want to challenge all of us to read God's Word consistently, and whatever we learn, let's decide to do more than enough of what God calls us to do. Then, let's see how God works in us and in others.
