Knowing God's Heart
When we read the Bible we learn about a lot of things. The most important things we learn are about God. We learn facts about how great and powerful He is. We learn about His great works. However, one thing many people miss is learning about His heart. We need to know why He does what He does, not just that He does it. There is a verse in Jeremiah that does that. (Jeremiah 36:3) God told the house of Judah all the disaster He was going to bring on them and the city of Jerusalem by having Jeremiah write His Word and his servant Baruch read it in the temple. God was hoping that when they heard this, each one of them would turn from their evil ways, so He could forgive their evil ways and sin. That is still God's heart today.
Many of us think that God is mean. We can think He is too strict about sin. Also, we can think He enjoys hurting us. None of that is true. God hates sin because it takes us to hell, and even if we are saved, it breaks our relationship with Him. Therefore, He warns us about His punishment in His Word and in our heart. His desire is for us to turn away from our sins and be forgiven, so we can have close fellowship with Him. God's heart is a heart of love. Even His disasters are done out of love and care for each of us.
