A Guard for My Mouth

There is one part of our body that gets most of us in trouble more than all the other parts put together. I am sure you know what part I am referring to. Yes, from our mouths come all kinds of things that should never be said and sounds we ought not to allow to escape. If we could just keep the wrong things from coming out, our lives would be so much better. David knew this, and He knew the solution to the problem, too. (Psalm 141:3) David prayed for the Lord to set a guard for his mouth. He went on to pray that the Lord would keep watch at the door of his lips. David knew what we all need to know, so let's remind ourselves of this truth.

There is no human being who can control his or her mouth completely, all the time. It is impossible. James told us that in his book in the New Testament. However, with God all things are possible. God can tame the tongue. He can set a guard for our mouth, if we will humbly submit to Him and follow His direction. The truth is that every one of us, as believers, has the Holy Spirit living in us. He is a powerful guard for our mouth. He is able and willing to keep watch over the door of our lips so nothing slips out that should not have been uttered. We need His help because we are hurt by idle words, gossiping words, or rotten words that we speak. He can and will show us these words before they come out, so we can take them captive quickly and stop them. (II Corinthians 10:3-6) Of course, sometimes we can just sigh at the wrong time and cause a problem. Other times, we can let out a chuckle at an inappropriate time. Just suffice it to say that we need the Lord to guard everything that could come out of our mouth, if we are to be free from these troubles. I pray we will all depend on the Lord for this like David did.
