I Shall Sing of Your Strength

It is right for us to have a song in our hearts and on our lips all of the time. Singing is a wonderful gift of God to allow us to express the emotions of our hearts to Him. It blesses Him by our praises, and it is a blessing for us to be able to sing forth from our soul what God means to us. We see this over and over again in the psalms, especially the psalms of David. (Psalm 59:16) David loved to sing of God's strength and His lovingkindness. He sang in the morning and all day long, because God had been his stronghold and his refuge in the day of his distress. For those of us who know the Lord, we have seen these things and we should be singing to Him, too.

Some of us feel self-conscious when sing. We think that we can't sing as well as other people, and we fear they will laugh at our attempts to sing, or they will say bad things about us to others. None of that should matter when we sing to the Lord. Our singing in private or in public worship should come from deep within us. It is deeply personal as an expression of praise and thanksgiving to God for being so strong and loving toward us. We should be able to relate to the words of the songs which speak of God being a refuge in our times of distress, and we should sing them forth with conviction for all to hear. Our singing becomes our testimony to God and to others about the power and glory of God. It will draw people to the Lord, even if all we can do is to make a "joyful noise" to Him.
