Impressed by Commitment

Sometimes we run across a person who has made an amazing commitment to something or to someone, and it is very impressive to us. The reason is that we rarely see such a deep commitment in our world. Ruth made the commitment to stay with her mother-in-law after the death of her husband and her father-in-law. (Ruth 2:11) She left her parents and her homeland to go to another country and people she did not previously know. She changed her whole world to help her mother-in-law, Naomi. When the close relative of Naomi, Boaz, heard her story and met her as she gleaned in his field, he took the time to compliment her devotion and to welcome her to stay with his young ladies to glean in his fields. I believe we all should be impressed with her commitment and learn from her example.

Ruth was still grieving the loss of her husband. She was a young widow, and she did not know what she was going to do to support herself, since she had no children. All this being true, Ruth still loved her mother-in-law enough to go back to her hometown of Bethlehem with her. She left her family behind. She left her culture behind. She went to a strange culture to start over. When she made the commitment to Naomi to follow her, she even said that Naomi's God would be her God. Let's not understate how amazing this was. Boaz saw it and blessed her for it. The main thing is that God saw it, and blessed her by taking her to the field of Boaz to glean. That was the first place she went. Isn't God good to reward commitment to family and to Him? I have always found that to be the case. I pray that we will all be people of great commitment to the things God values, and others will be impressed by that commitment. Perhaps, they will be drawn to Jesus by seeing the difference in our life.
