The Son of the Living God
Who is Jesus? That is the most important question that anyone will ever answer. Our eternal destiny depends on us knowing the correct answer to that question. Then, once we know the right answer, we have to take the step of faith, so we can be redeemed by God's grace. As Jesus was spending time with His 12 disciples, He asked them who other people were saying He was. The disciples gave various answers, but none of them were the correct answer. Then, Jesus asked them who He was. Peter was the one who spoke up first a lot of times. Sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong. On this occasion His response was exactly right. (Matthew 16:16) I am sure that Jesus was so glad to hear that confession come from the mouth of the leader of the group. He knew that Peter had heard from the Father, and that is why he could give such an insightful reply. Let's look at what Peter said.
Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. The word Christ is from Greek, and Messiah comes from Hebrew. They both have the same meaning. Jesus was "The Anointed One." He was sent by God, the Father, with a special mission, to pay for the sins of mankind, so all could be redeemed from their sins. He was anointed by the Holy Spirit at His baptism, and He continued to work and teach in the power of the Spirit as God's Envoy to this world. He was the Son of the Living God, not that He was born or had a beginning. No, Jesus was and is Eternal God. He was Son in the sense that He came to show us the Father. He told us when He was here that if you had seen Him, you had seen the Father. He was the Second Person of the Trinity, and thus, as God, He was the perfect revelation of God. Therefore, when we see these two things about Jesus, we have a decision to make. We can turn from our sins, put our faith in Him to forgive our sins, and surrender to Him as Lord, or we can go our own way. There is no other option. I pray we will all see who Jesus is and trust Him for who He is, so we can become a child of God, if we have not already done that.
