We are God's Monument
We build monuments to people who are famous or powerful. People visit the monuments and learn about the legacy left by that individual. Monuments are a good thing. They lead us to know our history, and we can see the people who shaped our world, either for good or for evil. God is the greatest Being in the universe. His radiance exceeds anything in earth or sky. However, He did not only revel in His glory and the praises of His people. He created a monument to point people to Him. God's monument is His people. We have been saved from our sins, changed forever, and we sing the praises of God, so everyone can see the Lord and come to know Him. (Psalm 148:13,14) We need to make sure we are a good representation of what God does for people who are His intimate friends.
We are commanded to praise God, not because He is arrogant and wants our praises to build up His ego. We are to praise God for who He is, so we can show forth His glory to those around us in all we say and do. There is plenty for which to praise God, since He far outshines anything on this earth or in the sky. He made us into new creatures when we trusted Jesus. We are trophies of His grace. We are monuments to His love and mercy. He built us into His Body, the church, so we can praise Him corporately, and serve Him in all we do together. The church helps us become intimate friends with God. Then, we are even better monuments to Him for all to see.
