Principled People
Are you a principled person? Do you have principles by which you live, and you will not violate those principles? If so, where did you get those principles? These are all questions for each of us to answer, being totally honest with ourselves. It is very easy to justify breaking our principles, but that always gets us in trouble. However, it is also very common for people to have the wrong principles, which also leads them into trouble. Job knew this truth, and he was noticing the reactions of people who saw his plight. He saw some people aghast at his condition, others jumped to judgment that he was a hypocrite, while the principled people held tight, keeping a firm grip on life, just sure their clean, pure hands would get stronger and stronger. ((Job 17:9) This is something for us to ponder.
When we have the right principles for our lives and we stick with them, we are righteous before God and others. I am not saying we are saved by works. I am saying if we realize the principle of salvation by grace through faith, and we live by it, we will be right with God. If we live by God's principles toward others, we will be right in our relationships with others, too. I believe Job put himself into this category of people. He was holding on tight to life, even though he was suffering terribly, and his hope was waning. He was sure that his clean, pure hands before God and others would lead to more and more strength for him. Therefore, Job held to his belief in God, and he did not blow up at God or others, even though it was so tempting. He knew suffering was a big part of life, but Job just could not figure out why he was suffering so much. Because of his right principles and his firm grip on life, Job persevered through the suffering. He kept hope, too, even though it was small. In the end we will see that Job's belief about the principled person was correct. That is why we all need to live like Job, no matter what happens to us.
