Children of God
God wanted the People of Israel to know that they were His children. As a people they were holy or set apart to God as His cherished treasure. That is why they were to be different from the pagan people and not do the same things they did out of their dead religions. (Deuteronomy 14:1,2) They should not have felt compelled to mutilate their bodies or shave their hair in weird ways because their neighbors were doing these things. Today, Christians are the children of God, and we need to follow this admonition, too.
Believers will have friends and neighbors die who were not Christians. We try to comfort these families in their grief. However, we do not need to express our grief as they do. We are not to sorrow as those who have no hope. Instead, we should be testimonies of how God can and will help us through our grief to become stronger. This is easier when we know that we are special to God. He chose to make all of us who know Christ His children, so we should try hard to allow the Spirit to empower us to live like His children, never giving in to the schemes of Satan, and never acting like those who do not believe in Him. This should cause us to rejoice in being His personal treasure and give Him all of the glory for this.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Deuteronomy 15-18.
