The Empathy of God for Us

God loves and cares for His children beyond anything we can imagine. In fact, I do not think we can humanly conceive of the depth of His feelings for us. Our victories produce a great joy in His heart, and our pain and sorrow causes Him terrible pain. The Prophet Zechariah showed us this truth as he relayed the message of the Lord to His people in his day. (Zechariah 2:8) Nothing has changed for us, as believers, today. His empathy is just as intense as ever.

When we get hurt, sometimes we get angry with God, and we are tempted to believe that He does not care about us. Nothing could be further from the truth. God is a Good, Good Father, and our pain touches Him deeply, like the pain of our children causes us to hurt for them. In fact, when we are hurt, it is like someone pokes his finger in the pupil of God's eye. That is the worst pain a human can feel, and that is the way God describes His pain when we are hurt. His pain is immediate and deep, even deeper than what we are feeling. That is why God is moved to protect us and to bring us relief from our pain. It may not come as soon as we desire or in the way we would have soothed our own pain, but His ways are higher than our ways. His comfort is better than what we would have chosen, for He knows how to bring something positive out of our pain and sorrow. I pray we will remember this word picture of God's empathy, and run to Him when we are struck by life, and we are suffering any kind of pain.
