No Reverence for God's Word

Since Jeremiah was called by God to be a prophet, God gave him His Word to proclaim to the people in various situations. Then, God told Jeremiah to have Baruch, his aid and scribe, write down all of God's words on a scroll. After that, Jeremiah was told to send Baruch to read the scroll to the people in the temple. When he did that the king's officials had the scroll read to King Jehoiakim. The king listened, but he cut the scroll in pieces and burned it all into the fireplace. No one there reverenced the Word of God. They were not afraid of burning it, and they did not tear their clothes to show their anguish. (Jeremiah 36:23,24) They were brazenly defiant of God's Word. This is the way it is for many people today.

The Word of God is holy. It is the very words of God. We should reverence it, not just by honoring it, but by reading it and obeying it. God expects us to do more than simply listen to it. He has given us His Word, so that we can order our life by His Word and be blessed. We will begin to do this faithfully and completely, when we have a very healthy reverence for God's Word. We should be afraid of knowing the Bible and not doing it. God judges us severely for that sin. The more we know, the more we are accountable to keep it. It should cause us anguish when we fail to heed God's Word. We should confess that as sin, and repent, so that we will not fail to do it. That is why we have the Bible. It is for our good. It is our food to nourish us. It is our light to show us the way. Let's reverence it well, so we can know the Lord and follow His will.
