The First King of Israel
The people of Israel went to Samuel, when he was getting old, and demanded that he appoint a king over them. They wanted to be like the other nations. Samuel asked God what to do, since he did not think this was a good idea. God told him to appoint a king, because the people were rebelling against Him, not against Samuel. They had done this ever since they left Egypt, so now God gave them what they wanted. He chose Saul, the son of Kish, to be the king, and Samuel anointed him as the first king. Later, after a great victory, he was confirmed by the people in God's presence, and the people were very happy. (I Samuel 11:15) I wonder how many times we have made similar mistakes?
Often, we go to the Lord and demand that we get what we want. That is never wise, since we do not know what is best for us. Our choices end up causing us pain and confusion. However, God grants our requests at times, because He wants us to learn a valuable lesson. Things go well for a while, and we are happy. The problem is that later we see the error of our ways, but by then, things have deteriorated. At last, we have to admit our pride, repent, and ask God to give us His will, instead of our will. If we would just pray that way the first time, it would save us so much pain and stress. I pray that we will see this clearly as we read through I Samuel and the account of the first king.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 12-14.
