A Father's Love
There is a special bond that should develop between every father and his son. It is how God designed us. However, it does not always happen as it should. As fathers we need to make this a priority, especially for the well being of our son, but also, for us. David had failed to build that type of relationship with Absalom, and it hurt both of them. Absalom rebelled, and eventually their armies clashed, resulting in the death of Absalom. David had asked his troops to spare his son, but Joab killed him anyway. This threw David into deep grief, because of his love for his son. (II Samuel 18:33) His heart was broken as he thought about what had happened, and David wept over his son. I believe we can relate to his pain, if we have a son.
David was not the only one who grieved the death of his son. God the Father actually offered His Only-Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to be killed for the sins of the world. He sent Him to earth knowing that was His mission. The Father anticipated that dark day, and when it came, He made the sun go dark over the earth as He grieved over the suffering and death of Jesus. I believe we can all draw comfort knowing that God has felt our deepest pain when it comes to losing a loved one, whether a son, daughter, or spouse. He is the God of all comfort, and He is there to comfort us by His Spirit. What a wonderful, loving God we serve!
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 19-22.
