Called into God's Service
As I read about the Levites here in Numbers, I was reminded that God calls some people into full-time service for Him. Sometimes, we are tempted to call it "special service," but all service for the Lord is special. Every believer is called to serve the Lord in some way. However, God does have a way of providing for His full-time servants, so they can be free to concentrate on His service. In the Old Testament the Levites took care of all of the items of the tabernacle and the temple, except for doing the duties of the priesthood. God declared, "The Levites belong to Me." (Numbers 3:11,12) What a privilege it is to be able to be in full-time service and to know that God is watching out for us in a specific way to allow us to do His will.
God did not give the tribe of Levi and area of land in Israel like the other tribes, but He gave them land around the main cities in every tribe's area. This way they could live throughout the tribes, and they could have a way of growing crops for their support. When they were traveling in the wilderness, they lived in the center of the camp, all around the tabernacle. That way they could protect it, and pack it up when it was time to move out. They were the only ones who could come close to the items of the tabernacle. Anyone else would be killed.
I point out these things because some people may be scared to follow the call of the Lord into full-time service. They may think that they will not be able to fulfill their calling, or that they will not be able to take care of their family. I have found that God is always faithful. When He calls us, He provides for us. He watches over us, so we can focus on His will for us. If you feel the call please say yes to the Lord. It is a great blessing!
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 5-7.
