Destroying the Devil

I hope we are all taking time this Christmas season to consider the significance of Christmas, so we can celebrate it well. I am sure one could write an entire book on the importance of Jesus Christ coming in the flesh. The truth that we find today in the book of Hebrews is one that we do not hear as often, though. The writer of Hebrews reminded us that since we have flesh and blood, Christ took on flesh and blood, that by His death, He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil. (Hebrews 2:14) Now that is a reason for rejoicing!

The incarnation of God in the Person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth is an inexpiable miracle of God. However, the need for the incarnation is very clear. Jesus came to be our Savior, so He had to take on humanity, so He could die for all of humanity. The purpose of His death was to pay for our sins by His unique blood, and to die in our place, since we had the sentence of death from sin upon us. While He was atoning for our sins, He was also defeating the devil and destroying his power. Once Christ arose from death in victory over the devil, He could give us victory, too. When we trust Him, He becomes our life, and we are given His Spirit. Now, the devil can have no power over us that we do not give to him. He can never defeat us, if we rely on the power of Christ and the Holy Spirit. His power of death has been destroyed once and for all. I pray that we all know Christ, and we realize that the devil has no power that can defeat us, as we walk in the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Hebrews 3-6.
