Sent Like Jesus was Sent by the Father

Jesus wasted no time after His resurrection to meet with His disciples and to give them their commission for making disciples. He was very specific as to what they should do. They were to go into the world, as the Father had sent Him into the world. (John 20:21) The meaning is clear. He was telling them to go and do the same things He had done. He with them to disciple them for 3 years, and part of that process was being sent out to share the good news of His coming. Therefore, they were to use the same methods to make disciples themselves. Then, those disciples would do the same things, until more and more people came to know Jesus. Now, we are the ones who have come to Christ because of their obedience, and we need to be obedient, too. Multitudes of lost souls are dependent on us.

The Father's mission for Jesus had two parts. He was to be with the disciples and to send them out to preach. Let's look at both parts, so we are clear on what we are to do. As Jesus was with these men, He taught them, and He modeled the way life was to be lived. They saw how He interacted with others, and they heard what He said in response to their questions. This way they saw He was genuine. Therefore, we must be intentional about spending time with others to help them grow as disciples. We should just do what Jesus did. Then, we should send them out to preach. That word scares people. It does not mean to deliver sermons in front of a crowd. It means to share the message of Jesus and the gospel with other people. It can be one-on-one, in a small group, or in a large crowd. He wants us to do this in the way that suits our gifts and abilities. It is possible for all of us to go out for Him. It is just that simple, but we have to accept our commission and fulfill it in His power.

Tomorrow, I intend to read John 21 and Acts 1-3.
