Two Sins of God's People
Jeremiah was a prophet to the people of Judah just before the Babylonian captivity. He had to confront God's people in a very serious way to try to get them to turn back to God before it was too late. In spite of all of his efforts and the forceful delivery of God's message, the people still would not forsake their sins and repent. (Jeremiah 2:13) This message would apply very well to the American Christian churches today. Please, take in these words and allow God to speak to your hearts.
The first sin was that the people had forsaken God, who is the Fountain of Living Waters. He was the One who had led them for 40 years in the desert and supplied all two million of them with water and food. He was the One who delivered His people from Egypt, the most powerful nation in the world, and parted the Red Sea for them to escape Pharaoh and destroy the army of Egypt when the waters returned. How could the people forsake Him? It is hard to believe that they experienced these things and still turned their backs on Him. The same is true for those who live today, who have been saved by the precious blood of Christ, and then, they turn away from walking with Him to explore other gods.
The second sin was that they hewed out cisterns that were broken, so they could not hold any water. The religions and the false gods they embraced were totally corrupt and devoid of virtue. They were just temporary containers of stale water, which leaked the waters which they had. Any time we look to other gods or false religions, we are being foolish, thinking they are just as good as God's provision. Just think of the gods of the American believers, all of the things to which they look for rest and fulfillment in life.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 5-7.
