Isaiah's Description of Jesus
It is amazing how God inspired the Bible, so that the writers were able to give specifics about people, places, and events hundreds of years before they happened. In the case of Isaiah, he was able to give a detailed account of what was going on with Jesus during His crucifixion. He gave part of it in chapter 53, but in chapter 50 it is just as specific and dramatic. (Isaiah 50:6,7) Let's look at the facts.
Isaiah told us 800 years before Jesus was born that He would give His back to those who would strike Him. We read in the gospels that the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus before the crucifixion, during which they struck His back numerous times with a 9 stranded whip, until His skin was ripped off and muscles exposed. Then, they pulled out His beard as Isaiah recorded. All of this was done, as Jesus willingly gave Himself for us and for our sins to be forgiven. He allowed Himself to endure their disgrace and spitting in His face. He knew that if He allowed Himself to be disgraced like this, the Father would not allow the disgrace to last. He would not let His Only Begotten Son to be disgraced forever. He bore our shame, but then, God the Father exalted His name above all names. (Philippians 2:11) That is why Jesus was so determined to die that shameful death for all of us. He knew it would please the Father to allow Him to be struck for us, so we could have life. Isaiah foresaw all of that, and gave us this account so we can marvel at the power of God to carry out His plan of salvation for us in His love.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 51-53.
