God's Word, like Fire and a Hammer

There are many descriptions of God's Word in the Bible. I will not go through them here. However, I will say they all point out its power and perfection. Jeremiah gave us his insight into the Word of God. (Jeremiah 23:29) I believe His way of describing God's Word will make us all think about it in a new way and appreciate it more.

God's Word is like fire. Yes, fire is hot and it burns, but it is also useful in cooking and purifying metals. His words can destroy the things that are not lasting, like hay and straw, but it can make iron stronger by tempering it. The same fire can cook our food to kill germs, and to make it taste better than ever. We only have to fear fire if it is not used in the right way. However, it can harm anyone or anything that tries to go against it. That is true of God's Word.

God's Word is also like a hammer that breaks rock in pieces. We would call it a sledge hammer. The Word of God has the capacity to break open hard hearts and to break through the skulls of hard headed people. When it does, those people come face to face with the reality of God's truth. Their hearts are broken, so they can choose to turn to God. Their way of thinking in their minds is shattered, so they can turn to the Lord in repentance. In short, there is not anyone who can't be overcome by God's Word, and there is no one that can't benefit from the power of the Word. Let's use it wisely, and always heed it, so we won't be burned or broken by it.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 24-27.
