Better than Great Treasure
Many people think that one of the greatest things that could happen to make their lives better is to receive a lot of money or a great treasure. They sincerely believe this would solve their problems and lead to peace and happiness for them and their families. I am sorry to be the one to break it to you, if you are in this group, but that is not usually the case, at all. In fact, those who win the lottery or come into a great inheritance often find that great trouble comes with the great treasure. That is why the Lord told us all what is better than great treasure. (Proverbs 15:16) Since not many people will ever have great treasure, this is very good news for all people.
The Lord inspired Solomon to tell us that "Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it." That is a profound truth that I have seen many times. I have traveled to very poor areas in the world. There were homes that had thatched roofs and dirt floors. They lived on a very meager income, but they did have a little for their families. However, the main ingredient in their home was the fear of the Lord, and because of that they had something better than great riches. They had happiness peace, joy, and love that comes from knowing the Lord and living in His will. In fact, these people have been the most joyful people I have met in my life so far.
Therefore, I would urge each of us to cultivate a very healthy fear of the Lord by trusting Christ and following His Word every day. Then, no matter what else we may have, we have the main thing we need for this life and the next. We have access to all of the blessings God has laid up for us, and His treasure is better than any earthly treasure. We are truly wealthy when we have the fear of the Lord.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 16-18.
