Sorrow or Laughter?
Solomon told us that sorrow is better than laughter. That seems strange to a lot of people, because they do not ever want to be sad. However, the truth is that we all will be sorrowful from time to time. It happens to everyone all of the time. It is not bad. It is part of life. It is good to sorrow over serious things that cause us sadness. However, we can have a sad face and a happy heart at the same time. (Ecclesiastes 7:3) That is what God intends for all of us.
Circumstances do not make us truly happy. We get deep happiness or joy from knowing the Lord and from knowing He is a loving, wise God who takes care of us. Therefore, when we are sorrowful, we express our sorrow in a good way. We deal with our grief well, and we move on with the Lord guiding us. We can deal with the sorrow well and even learn from it, because we have joy in our hearts. Therefore, we need to see that sorrow teaches us more than laughter, and that makes it better than laughter. However, a happy heart enables us to withstand the sorrow and to profit from it. I pray that all of us know the joy of the Lord in every circumstance of life.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Ecclesiastes 8-10.
