Correcting Children
Children need to be taught and trained in what is right and wrong. There are many theories about the best ways to do that. However, I believe the Designer of us all knows the best way, by far. Therefore, we need to listen to everything the Bible has to say about rearing children. Solomon had some keen insights from the Lord for us. (Proverbs 29:15.17) Let's think about these.
We must be diligent to impart wisdom to our children. Wisdom begins with fearing God. Therefore, the rod and reproof give wisdom to a child. The rod is a deterrent to doing the wrong thing again, and reproof is the explanation of why what they did was wrong. Both are vital. If we allow our children to get their own way, they will bring shame to their mother and father. However, when we correct our children well, they will give us comfort and be a delight to us and others. Therefore, we must not forsake physical punishment, and we must not give in to our children to grant them what they want. Their fallen human nature will lead them in the wrong way, until they know the Lord, and they have been trained in the Lord. (Proverbs 22:6) Parents must take on the role of correcting their children, if they want to have children who are a delight to them and others.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 31 and Ecclesiastes 1-3.
