Costly Worship

David was an expert on worship. About half of the psalms which the Israelites used to worship the Lord were written by him under the inspiration of the Spirit. He loved to worship the Lord freely without any inhibitions, as he did when he danced before the ark of the covenant. David had learned a very important principle of worship which we all need to learn. If worship is not costly, it is not meaningful to us or the Lord. (II Samuel 24:24)

David had to buy the threshing floor to offer his sacrifices to stop the plague, even though Araunah offered to give it to David for his worship. David would not offer worship to the Lord that did not cost him anything. Why is that the case? If we worship God without a cost, we are not showing Him His worth to us, and that is what worship is all about. Also, God is worthy of our best offerings, and those cost us something. Then, He sees how much we love Him.

Today, many people go to worship services for what they can receive, not what they will give. That is the opposite of this principle. Worship is not for us to receive a blessing, but to bless the Lord. Worship is our time to give ourselves and all we have to the Lord. We do that best when we engage in costly worship. When it involves our time, energy, and money, we truly glorify God from our hearts by our willingness to give to Him who is worthy.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 1-4.
